Ricardo Monreal, the coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, defended the presence of Secretary of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez at the National Electoral Institute’s (INE) ceremony, stating that it should not be interpreted as interference by the Executive Branch. During a media interview on Friday, September 11, the deputy noted that it had been a long time since a representative of the Executive attended the start of an electoral process, such as the one held by the INE the previous Thursday. He emphasized that her attendance was a return to a tradition of executive participation in electoral ceremonies, which had been absent in recent years.
A gesture of courtesy
Monreal suggested that Rosa Icela’s attendance was a gesture of courtesy, as she was invited by the INE. He added that the Legislative Branch was also invited, with Deputy Sergio Gutiérrez Luna representing them. Monreal emphasized that there was no interference or intention to interfere in the upcoming electoral process. He further highlighted that the invitation extended to all branches of government shows the collaborative nature of Mexico’s democratic institutions, ensuring a unified front in supporting electoral integrity.

He dismissed the idea that Rosa Icela would engage in any undue or illegal interference in the 2027 electoral process. Monreal described the Secretary as a courteous, meticulous, and republican woman who accepted the invitation as a political courtesy. He also mentioned her track record of upholding institutional norms, which reinforces her commitment to respecting the autonomy of electoral bodies.
The 2027 electoral process begins
Rosa Icela attended the ceremony marking the start of the 2027 electoral process, which will see intermediate elections in June 2027. On social media, she stated that she attended on behalf of President Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasizing the importance of respecting the autonomy of electoral authorities to ensure free and peaceful elections with the Mexican people’s trust. Her presence was seen as a symbolic gesture of the administration’s commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law.
The INE officially launched the 2027 electoral process, during which 500 federal deputy positions and 19,609 local positions will be contested across the country, including 17 state governorships. The INE plans to set up over 176,000 voting centers for the election. On June 6, 2027, millions of Mexicans will vote to renew the federal Chamber of Deputies, as well as 31 local congresses and municipalities. This extensive logistical effort reflects the INE’s dedication to ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in the electoral process, catering to Mexico’s diverse population.

INE President Guadalupe Taddei stated that the institute is ready for the elections and called on all authorities and political parties to respect the electoral rules. The INE approved a budget proposal of 31.431 billion pesos for 2027, which will be considered by the Chamber of Deputies. Taddei also emphasized the importance of civic education and voter engagement initiatives to enhance public trust in the electoral system.
The 17 state governorships up for election are in Aguascalientes, Baja California, Baja California Sur, Campeche, Chihuahua, Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Querétaro, Quintana Roo, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tlaxcala, and Zacatecas. These states represent a diverse cross-section of Mexico, both geographically and socioeconomically, making the elections a significant test of regional political trends.
The presence of representatives from all three branches of government at the ceremony, including Rosa Icela, highlights the collaborative effort to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process.
