Comcast has invested over £250 million in its new Universal theme park in Bedford, marking among the biggest investments ever made in British tourism. The 540-acre development, built on a former brickworks site, is scheduled to open in 2031 and aims to compete with Disneyland Paris as Europe’s most popular entertainment resort. The project will generate 28,000 jobs and feature a 500-room hotel, a shopping and dining district, and attractions inspired by James Bond, Jurassic World, and Paddington Bear.
The UK government actively supported Comcast’s selection of Bedford over international competitors. Located within the Oxford-to-Cambridge “growth corridor,” the site was chosen for its strategic position. Officials fast-tracked planning permissions and pledged £1.3 billion in public funds to facilitate the project. They also included £474 million for local transport upgrades, with additional funding allocated for infrastructure improvements.
Significant infrastructure projects accompany the theme park. A new railway station with four platforms will connect the site directly to London, addressing the lack of existing rail links. The nearby A421 trunk road is being widened, and a dedicated junction is under construction. These upgrades are part of broader plans to develop the region into “Europe’s Silicon Valley,” promoting growth in every postcode.
Comcast’s financial commitment to the resort, managed through its UDX subsidiary, has grown steadily. Accounts reveal £59 million spent on land acquisition and £84 million on construction in the most recent year. Additional investments of £99 million and £14 million were recorded in prior years. They were primarily for land purchases while awaiting planning approval. The company has pledged a total of £6 billion for building and operating the resort.
The government’s financial support will be disbursed in two phases. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport will provide a £438 million grant once community infrastructure work is complete. It also plans a £400 million subsidy for the resort’s opening in 2031.
By combining entertainment with advanced transport links, the development may attract international visitors and investment.
